Ely Wildspace
One important reason behind the problems at Roswell is that the value of the area,
its importance to surrounding habitats, and its vulnerability to development, were
not fully appreciated before the 2006 sale. With this in mind, as well as
campaigning
against a marina at Roswell, LCPRE is working hard with the Wildlife
Trust to develop a broader vision for the wider area, which we're calling the Ely Wildspace.
We want to see the remaining habitat patches around the eastern edge of Ely conserved
as a consolidated green corridor, buffering the city, and safeguarding its remaining
wildlife from harmful development.
We have begun to identify key areas that we think need to be included in the Wildspace
if its wildlife and recreational values are to be sustained. We believe that all of these
green spaces must be properly protected and managed in an integrated way for the combined
benefit of both wildlife and local people.
We have been working with LCPRE members, relevant landowners, organizations and stakeholders, to further develop the
Ely Wildspace vision. A map of the draft Wildspace area is available here.
