In 2006 the largest of Roswell Pits and adjacent parts of Ely Common
were bought by a developer. Indications are that he plans to
convert the area into a marina for narrowboats. This will house up to
50 boats to start with, but the new owner has talked about the long-term
possibility of mooring 500 boats and even building a hotel there. Despite
having no planning permission, work has begun on the site (with trees
cleared, and services and hard standing installed); bookings for berths
have already been taken too. |

The main pit is a County Wildlife Site, and in June 2008 it was
declared part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its
wetland birds as well as its geology. It also hosts a vibrant,
long-established sailing club reliant on quiet, unpolluted water.
The pit has not been exposed to frequent motorised boat traffic in
living memory, and it provides vital habitat for many rare and
sensitive species.

We believe that the construction work, noise, physical disturbance and pollution
that a marina will bring will cause significant harm to wildlife.
We think - and
local users tell us
- it will also greatly reduce the existing amenity
values of the area for the people of Ely and beyond.
